New Orleans’ Rap artist Rob49 has shaken the world with his viral hit WTHelly, and he continues his legacy with his new album Let Me Fly. Thanks to °1824, we sat down to speak with Rob49 about this latest project. 

Let Me Fly, Rob49’s latest project, encapsulates the breakout artist’s identity and the experiences he has learned from throughout his career. After earning his XXL Freshman spot in 2023, Rob is here to cement his name amongst rap’s best. This album is Rob’s chance to unapologetically show others who he is. He recalls thinking about the album as the beginning to his growth- a way to communicate the beginning of him being comfortable and confident in his sound. He wants to show listeners he can do anything and everything.

Let Me Fly has been an experience for Rob49 as he finds his voice and what he feels is his most authentic self. Rob wants to show his fans that he can rap, as he has so much talent in the space, just by being himself. However, he knows he wants to expand past Hip-Hop/Rap eventually. Let Me Fly, to him, is like jumping in a pool, but he wants to jump in the ocean.  He hopes his talents and interests will eventually get him to what he calls “rockstar” status.

While Rob49’s music follows many different ideas, he just wants fans to enjoy themselves while listening to the album. He wants to bring listeners into his world. From start to end, this new project represents motivation, both for Rob to keep growing and creating, and for listeners who can relate to his work.

Rob knows his potential and has a clear idea of what he wants his future to look like. Before his viral single, WTHelly dropped, he knew exactly what he wanted the audience to take away and the impact it was going to have online. He knew audiences would feel a connection to the track, which was important to him at the time.

After the release of WTHelly and his rise to more fame, connecting with his audience is an ongoing task for the artist.  He has found the best way to connect is face to face, with “real life” interactions. While social media has done so much for his career, it is not his ideal way of finding an authentic connection to fans. In-person interactions leave a longer impression and are more meaningful to him, so he can see the fans for who they are, rather than a predicted number through terms of streaming and apps. 

Even with this in mind, he still put the song out because he felt personal fulfillment from it, and it was something he felt passionate about at the time. Being true to himself is something that Rob has found becoming more prominent as he grows creatively. Early in his career, he mentions that being authentic was a major mental block, and he wanted to sound like people other than himself. Rob soon realized that this was not the way he wanted to keep working.
