This past Thursday Sombr released his latest single “My Body Isn't Ready” after debuting it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this past Thursday night. The single comes ahead of his “You Are the Reason” Tour which launches in Mexico City on July 22nd and following the release of his latest two singles “Homewrecker” and “Potential” that were released earlier this year.

The song is arguably his most open one yet, diving into his struggles with body perception and self confidence.

“I hope this song can mean different things to different people,” he said in his Instagram post announcing its release, “It can be taken as a metaphor. Or it can be taken literally as a description of how I have perceived my own body, for my whole life.”

Produced by Sombr and Tony Berg, verse one opens reflecting on a previous 4th of July. The lyrics, “My friends wanna catch the tide / How I wanna go, but I'll stay home”, highlight that even though he’s invited to be a part of a community, he is still left out due to his own insecurities.

Leading into the chorus “I like you, but my body isn't ready / I want you, but the mirror won't let me” reveals the similar dilemma. He wants to be vulnerable with his partner but believes his body “isn’t ready” to be seen.

The bridge is where we wrap back around to the beginning, he references the ocean again, saying “If I could crawl out of my own skin, would you let me in? / If we could just be those kids again, maybe I could swim.” Even now he’s thinking about how if he could be “released” from his body he can be available and ready to be a part of a relationship.

Not only do I think the song is catchy and well produced, but I believe this topic is important and relevant, specifically with the nature of comparison and the media in today's culture. Though the song's lyrics are simple, they are straight forward and honest with its audience. He doesn’t hide how he’s feeling between metaphors or leave the song's interpretation up to the listeners, but reveals an aspect of how he views himself in hopes that people will be able to see themselves within the music.

“I wanted to write about my struggle so that other people who may also be struggling know that they are not alone. You are beautiful, and I love you.” Sombr signed off his post.

He also tagged a new Instagram account, @donotreadthisjournal in the singles announcement. Currently there is nothing posted on it, yet the profile photo features new film photos: One of him flopped over the arm of a couch or chair and the other an ash tray with the bio saying “DO NOT READ THIS”. He also performed a pop-up show in New York at the Music Hall of Williamsburg Friday, June 26.
