The sixteenth annual Maha Festival kept rocking rain or shine at the Heartland of America Park in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday August 8. Heavy downpours, lightning strikes and cloudy skies plagued the event but couldn’t squash the good vibes.
Maha’s lineup had a little bit of something for everyone. From rising local talent right here in Omaha to Grammy Award-winning artists, there wasn’t a set to miss!
Carver Jones started Maha after the gates opened, though the show didn’t last long due to the first lightning strike delay of the day. David Nance & Mowed Sound got the show rolling again with all the good vibes following gates reopening at 4p.m.. The crowd got moving when Whitney took the stage and banged out song after song, trying to make the most of their shortened set due to weather. Blondshell, “Alt rock supernova,” dubbed by the New York Times, had fans screaming along in the crowd to songs like “Violins,” the title track of her upcoming album releasing September 25. Killer Mike returned to the Maha stage sans his rap group Run the Jewels. For many of the acts Maha is just another stop on their tour, but Killer Mike made a special trip to Omaha just for the festival
Maha did their best to make the most of a rather soggy evening by offering discounts on beverages purchased after a certain point. Some fans criticized this decision considering the acts were shortened due to the weather delays and ever looming curfew of midnight from the city of Omaha
More local favorites took to the stage as the night dwindled. Omaha legend Bright Eyes led an acoustic set, which was appropriate considering the rainy environment. A crowd full of ponchos looked back at frontman Conor Oberst while he strummed away to songs they haven’t played live since ‘09, including “Classic Cars.” As their set went on, the weather became a growing issue with lightning strikes in the area.
Bright Eyes concluded their shortened set with “Another Travelin’ Song” and swiftly started clearing the stage for the band everyone had been waiting for. Fog rolled in from smoke machines, and flashing lights were tested as the festival prepared for their headliner from across the pond to rock the riverfront.
After four weather delays, English indie rock band Wet Leg made an electric entrance with the crowd screaming back every word to “Catch These Fists.” Lead singer and guitarist Rhian Teasdale wowed the crowd with her muscles and overall rockstar energy as she riffed on stage. The band kept it short and sweet throughout the set between songs in an effort to squeeze as much into the limited time frame they had due to delays. After completing “Too Late Now” from their self-titled 2022 album, Teasdale shared they were being told the show could no longer go on.
“It breaks all of our hearts to do this to you, Maha,” said a representative of the festival organization as he announced the end of the event. “We pushed it off as long as we could, but we have to keep everybody safe.”
